More about CAFOD

You’ll know a bit about CAFOD (otherwise you probably wouldn’t be here). But just to recap, CAFOD stands for the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development. It’s the official aid charity for the Catholic Church in England and Wales and it’s all about working with people in the poorest countries of the world to make a real difference.

Raising funds

Money raised for CAFOD by schools, parishes and anyone one else who wants to give, is used by CAFOD to fund special projects in the poorest countries in Africa, Asia, South America and Europe so that the lives of people living in poverty can be changed.

For example, money you have helped raise may have gone towards:

  • buying new fishing boats for fishing families in India whose boats were destroyed by the tsunami
  • paying for former child soldiers in Liberia, Africa to stay at a special home where they can be cared for and helped come to terms with some of the horribly violent things they may have experienced during fighting in the civil war.

Campaigning to make a difference

But CAFOD is much more than about giving out money to those who need it. It’s also about campaigning to change some things that make it hard for people living in poverty to escape from it.

So CAFOD spends a lot of time and effort putting pressure on the government and other powerful institutions to change the way they deal with poorer countries.

CAFOD is campaigning to change the rules on trade, for example, which make it hard for poorer countries to sell their produce. And it campaigns for rich countries to cancel the money that poor countries owe them so that this money can be spent on things like new schools and better healthcare.
